Event Summary
In partnership with Wild Rock Outfitters in Peterborough, Ontario, we are thrilled to add a second event in 2018 to the FRETORI calendar. The idea behind the Wild Rock Sportive is to create a new cycling event experience, by incorporating an emerging style of riding with a celebration of cycling following the ride.

The Ride Itself
Unlike the Shimano Gran Fondo which begins on a Sunday morning, the Wild Rock Sportive will begin in the afternoon, at 3pm on a Saturday. Cyclists will ride a route that incorporates some of the finest roads in the Kawartha region, including gravel and road sections that will be challenging and yet absolutely stunning to ride. With the long daylight of summer, the scene is set to be remarkable.

Riders will complete 90-130km over a hilly parcours. When cyclists arrive back at Wild Rock Outfitters, we will have food, drinks and a fun interactive social evening planned from 8pm onwards.

The composition of the groups will be established through a distributed questionnaire following our registration deadline. We will work with every rider to ensure they ride with the group that is best suited to their abilities; faster, slower, longer or shorter – we will accommodate. This ride is about the experience of cycling with like-minded people.

The Packages
Beyond the ride and experience we are also going to add value through our courtesy packages that every guest will receive upon arrival to the event. For the Wild Rock Sportive we are offering a slightly different program for our packages. There is no cycling jersey or kit included in our package, however we will have specific packages for men’s and ladies. As a rule, we always strive to provide meaningful gifts that have real value and utility to them. For the Wild Rock Sportive we are aiming to keep costs reasonable because as a bonus after the event, for those who are interested, we will have a Wild Rock + FRETORI jersey – designed by the riders themselves, available for purchase following the event. More on that later!

About Wild Rock Outfitters & FRETORI Inc.
In the fall of 2015, after we left a meeting at Shimano Canada where we pitched the idea of hosting a Gran Fondo and they said, “yes,” we visited Wild Rock Outfitters as one of Shimano Canada’s key retail partners. We wanted to gauge their interest in supporting the FRETORI project. Without hesitation, they were in too. To say the least, that was massive for us. After two seasons of working closely Wild Rock to host the Shimano Gran Fondo with the highest standards in mind, we decided it was the perfect time to bring our supporters to their amazing retail store for a second event, with a different interactive experience and feel.

FAQ

Is this event a race?

No it’s not a race. We want to encourage riders of all abilities to attend. We will have full support with rest stations and follow vehicles just like the Shimano Gran Fondo. We will multiple distances & paces to ensure that riders of all abilities can ride at a level they are comfortable with. It’s a “sportive” style event as the name implies. For those who want to ride fast and longer, we’ll be able to accommodate, and for those who’d prefer to ride at an easier pace over a shorter distance, we’ll have a group for that too and everything in between.

We will have group leaders for each group to serve as guides and helpers as well. Regardless of your ability, our top priority is to ensure you have an incredible bike ride.

Because there are gravel roads, do I need a gravel bike?

A cyclocross bike or gravel bike with wider tires, 28-32mm would be ideal. However, if all you have a is road bike, you’ll be able to make it through the ride as it’s not exclusively gravel. The key difference between the Wild Rock Sportive and the Shimano Gran Fondo is we are not avoiding gravel with our course design, but rather seeking the best roads we can find. Road bikes are okay with a 25mm tire, but a gravel or cyclocross bike is better.

Is there a jersey included in the Wild Rock Sportive package?

For the Wild Rock Sportive, there will be no jerseys included in the packages. We have reserved that option for the Shimano Gran Fondo only. However, we will be providing a care package, with high quality items as a thank you and because it is a standard practice with FRETORI events. Some of the specific items are highlighted in the registration process and as always, we will have some surprises in the package too.

We will have a post event jersey offering as well, a design that will be in-fact created/inspired by attendees of the event itself. It will be a part of our evening celebrations. More info on that to come.

Should I book a hotel?

We are encouraging registrants to book a hotel given the ride and festivities will finish late in the evening. However, if you prefer not to, that’s okay too. We expect the dinner and party to conclude around 11pm.

We have partnered with some exciting organizations that will really add to the evening. We are convinced you’ll want to stay late. To accommodate showering post ride, it may be prudent to book a hotel. We are working to secure temporary shower facilities on site for just after the ride.

When is the registration deadline?
